About the ACT Community Sector Careers Gateway
The ACT Community Sector Careers Gateway promotes the benefits and opportunities for a career in the ACT community sector.
The Careers Gateway Program
The ACT Careers Gateway Program was established by the ACT Council of Social Service using a grant from the Australian Government’s National Careers Institute.
The Gateway aims at sharing the benefits and opportunities of community sector careers to primary and secondary school students, VET and university students and mid-career professionals looking to find a more rewarding job. It is also focused on retention of workers already in the community sector through mentoring and leadership development.
The ACT Community Sector Careers Gateway was developed to meet the current and future needs of the ACT community sector workforce as the sector grows and diversifies.
Who We Are
The ACT Community Sector Careers Gateway is an initiative of the ACT Council of Social Service (ACTCOSS). ACTCOSS is the peak body for the ACT’s not-for-profit community sector organisations and advocates for social justice in the ACT. The Careers Gateway is managed by ACTCOSS and oversight is provided by the Careers Gateway Steering Committee which included representatives from the tertiary education sector, community sector, ACT Government, Australian Government and employment services. It receives funding from the Australian Government’s National Careers Institute.
Showcasing the sector
The community sector can get a bad rap because of underfunding and the challenges of working on the frontline of service provision. However, at the ACT Community Sector Careers Gateway and ACTCOSS, we believe that our sector is pretty special.
We want to showcase the incredible personal, professional and community benefits of working in community organisations and the range of opportunities and roles available. We’re joined by many ACT Community Sector Career Ambassadors who are equally keen to tell anyone willing to listen about their own positive experience and to share advice and guidance about how you too can find a fulfilling and rewarding role.
Creating connections
The ACT Community Sector Careers Gateway is all about creating connections between community sector representatives and schools, colleges, universities, career influencers and the broader Canberra community.
This enables us to educate Canberrans about the work we do, the contribution we make and the opportunities for jobs and careers. We also link existing community sector colleagues with mentors and connect potential community sector workers with Ambassadors through events or even one-on-one introductions.
